Story Maps: digital mapping techniques for arts, humanities and cultures

Date
Date
Wednesday 4 November 2026, 14:00-16:00
Location
Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub

This DCCH workshop, designed for beginners, will introduce two tools used for making ‘story maps’, that is, maps that tell a story from arts, humanities and cultures research: StoryMap.js (a free, open-source tool) and ArcGIS StoryMaps (available via your UoL staff or student account).

Mapping has always played an important part in humanities research, but the growth in accessibility of digital mapping technology has changed how humanists use maps, both for research and to tell stories from that research to a range of audiences. The first part of the workshop will introduce some examples of how story maps are being used in arts, humanities and cultures research.

The second part will involve making a story map using StoryMap.js using a guided example with pre-circulated data (optionally, you can use data from your own research). Time for questions and discussion will be built in throughout the workshop, and the session will close with signposting to further support and resources.
